{"id":33,"date":"2013-09-21T23:28:28","date_gmt":"2013-09-21T23:28:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/?page_id=33"},"modified":"2013-11-29T05:57:15","modified_gmt":"2013-11-29T05:57:15","slug":"why-tagesuppe","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Tagesuppe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About 40 years ago I had just graduated from University.\u00a0 I had nothing better\u00a0to do\u00a0than wander through Europe.\u00a0 I started in Germany.\u00a0 It was winter and very cold.\u00a0 I ate a lot of soup to keep warm.\u00a0 The language barrier was always present, but I muddled through.\u00a0 One day I could see the soup pot as I walked into\u00a0a\u00a0Gasthaus for lunch.\u00a0 It looked interesting, so\u00a0I ordered some.\u00a0 It was delicious!\u00a0 To the waitress&#8217; delight, I had several servings.\u00a0 I had to\u00a0be able to order it\u00a0again\u00a0so I asked her &#8220;what kind of soup?&#8221;\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t understand.\u00a0 My German was poor and she spoke no English.\u00a0 After a pantomime she understood and triumphantly informed me it was Tagesuppe!<\/p>\n<p>A couple of days later and in a different town, I confidently ordered tagesuppe for lunch.\u00a0 I got chicken noodle.\u00a0 I patiently waited for the waitress to return and explained that I didn&#8217;t order chicken noodle, but wanted tagesuppe.\u00a0 She got angry and said a few choice words in German that I did not know but understood well.\u00a0 I ate the chicken noodle.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next few days I had similar, but less confrontational experiences.\u00a0 I devised a strategy.\u00a0 I found a well regarded restaurant where the staff spoke English.\u00a0 I chatted up a friendly waitress and then explained my dilemma.\u00a0 She laughed at me!\u00a0 I was offended.\u00a0 Then, in a manner reserved for small children; she explained that tagesuppe meant soup of the day&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Although I have had many wonderful soups since, I have yet to find my long lost tagesuppe.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years I have often thought of my tagesuppe and have occasionally told the story.\u00a0 Every day since, has\u00a0been it&#8217;s own &#8220;soup&#8221; of experiences and observations.\u00a0 I plan to write about a few of them here.\u00a0 Some historical, some contemporary.\u00a0\u00a0Some will be seasoned with\u00a0enough fiction to protect identities; or to add needed flavor.\u00a0\u00a0 The soup of the day will be my own creation.\u00a0\u00a0You may recognize the stock.\u00a0 You may not agree, your memory may contradict mine, you may not believe; I hope you will be entertained.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About 40 years ago I had just graduated from University.\u00a0 I had nothing better\u00a0to do\u00a0than wander through Europe.\u00a0 I started in Germany.\u00a0 It was winter and very cold.\u00a0 I ate a lot of soup to keep warm.\u00a0 The language barrier was always present, but I muddled through.\u00a0 One day I could see the soup pot [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-33","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/33","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=33"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/33\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":91,"href":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/33\/revisions\/91"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/tagesuppe.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=33"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
